Another is the extremely common artificial sweetener aspartame. In a recent animal study published in the journal Redox Biology, aspartame—found in many diet foods and drinks—was shown to generate free radicals that can trigger the death of brain cells. In a study recently published in the journal Research in Nursing & Health, researchers from the University of North Dakota assessed the short-term effects of aspartame on neurobehavioral effects. The researchers found that subjects consuming even a moderate amount—less than the FDA’s acceptable daily intake level—of aspartame for 8 days were more irritable in mood, exhibited more depression, and performed worse on spatial orientation tests.6,7
